The breakdown of a relationship can create significant changes for families, often bringing stress, confusion and emotional strain. Family Dispute Resolution (FDR), which is also known as family mediation, can help families communicate more effectively and work towards positive outcomes.
This service provides support to separating parties by respectfully resolving disputes or reaching agreements about finances, parenting arrangements and property.
At Relationships Australia – NT, sessions will take place with one of our qualified FDR practitioners, who will facilitate confidential conversations in a safe space. FDR practitioners will talk through what is happening, provide support and information and if needed, connect parties with additional support services.
It is important to note FDR can often take more than one appointment. FDR parenting sessions are scheduled for 3 hours and FDR property sessions are scheduled for 2 hours.
FDR can cover a range of topics including:
- Practical arrangements for how children will spend time with each parent, significant carers and other family members
- Reducing conflict between parents
- Cultural needs and considerations
- Complying with court orders and agreements
- Finances including the division of property, assets and debts
- Family pet ownership
- Holidays and special events
- Education and schooling
- Health and medical
With the right support, families can navigate separation with greater understanding, reduced conflict and confidence in the future.
This program is funded by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department.
